The Door County Maritime Heritage Society (DCMHS)was formed in 1990 by a group of concerned individuals interested in the preservation of our submerged cultural resources. Since its conception, the group has been responsible for posting awareness outlining state statutes governing these resources, surveying shipwrecks in the Jacksonport, Bailey's Harbor and surrounding areas, teaching classes in marine archaeology, and supporting new legislation to create underwater preserves in Wisconsin waters. The society was interested in showing scuba divers that through surveys and studies a better understanding of maritime history leads to a more responsible dive community and the preservation of these finite sites.
In January of 1993 Roy Lukes, working on a book for the University of Wisconsin Green Bay pertaining to the history of Toft Point which was donated to the University, contacted me as to a shipwreck that was part of that history. A search of records and books quickly pointed this out to be the schooner Ebeneezer which sank in the Alpina blow of 1880.
The Door County Maritime Heritage Society took on the project of surveying this site and was awarded a permit from the state Historical Society of Wisconsin on May 13, 1993. The field survey was conducted primarily on weekends from May 15 to August 1. The Door County Maritime Heritage Society put up $50.00 to pay for miscellaneous items such as film, video tape, and hardware used in the project.
The scope of the project was to survey the shipwreck at the point and pier. This non-disturbance survey concentrated on mapping the several exposed sections of a 19th century schooner and cultural material left from the pier operations. Objectives included to confirm the identity of this shipwreck as the Ebeneezer. To create an accurate site plan, section drawings, and provide information to U.W.G.B., and Wisconsin State Historical Society as to the historical and recreation potential of this site.
During the research for this report, a concept of analyzing shipbuilding in Green Bay and Fort Howard was adopted for reasons of, one the relationship of Toft Point and U.W.G.B. and the Ebeneezer being built in Fort Howard. Two, that there is very little research about shipbuilding in the area. Toft Point is located on the south side of Moonlight Bay (formerly Mud Bay) in Door County.
